New research has revealed that nearly four in five Australian mums would prefer a weekend away over a traditional Mother’s Day gift, with Queensland destinations dominating their travel wish lists.

The Tourism and Transport Forum survey found 78 per cent of Australian mums would be interested in receiving a staycation or holiday this Mother’s Day, with more than half saying they would love a trip away with their partner and children. One in five are craving a solo escape.

TTF CEO Margy Osmond said the shift towards experience-based gifting was clear.

“With almost 80 per cent of mums saying they would like to receive a staycation or holiday for Mother’s Day this year, the message is very clear. Mums are looking for time to connect with loved ones, time to step away from routine, and time to properly rest and recharge,” Ms Osmond said.

The Gold Coast ranked as the number one dream destination for mums, chosen by 15 per cent of those surveyed, followed by the Sunshine Coast at 10 per cent. Cairns, Port Douglas and surrounds and the Whitsundays both ranked at 8 per cent, as mums look to swap cooler autumn weather for sunshine. Sydney and Melbourne rounded out the top five.

Over half of all Australians have either already gifted mum a trip or would like to in future, with 35 to 44-year-olds the most likely age group to have done so.
John Warn, Experience Gold Coast CEO, said the research confirmed what locals already knew.

“From our stunning beaches and hinterland to our family-friendly experiences and outstanding dining and wellness offerings, the Gold Coast is a place where mums can relax, reconnect and create lasting memories,” Mr Warn said.
