Authorities in Bali have begun cracking down on tourists overstaying their visas.

Footage posted on social media shows immigration officers approaching visitors on the streets and checking their passports.

“We’re on routine patrol and we want to check your passport and your stay permit,” an officer tells travellers in the video posted to a local community news platform

It’s believed the crackdown is also aimed at people working illegally in Bali.

Some 100 officers have been patrolling the streets and doing random checks in popular tourist hotspots like Ubud, Seminyak, Canggu and Nusa Dua.

Officials are also inspecting businesses including motorbike rentals, nightclubs and beauty salons.

Tourists who overstay their permitted time in Bali face fines and in more severe cases detention or deportation.

Authorities say inspections will continue as part of the broader initiative to uphold immigration regulations in Bali. Officers are expected to maintain their presence in both tourism hotspots and commercial areas that employ foreign workers.
