One of Australia’s most famous film locations has reopened just in time to celebrate a major milestone.

Gunlom Falls in Kakadu National Park is welcoming visitors again following repairs to the access road after cyclone damage.

The falls were made famous as Echo Lake in the 1986 film Crocodile Dundee, where Paul Hogan’s character of Mick Dundee famously speared a barramundi, showcased his bushtucker skills and took a swim with American journalist Sue Charlton, played by Linda Kozlowski.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the film, making the reopening particularly timely for fans wanting to follow in Dundee’s footsteps.

Gunlom features both a lower billabong available for swimming from May to October and an upper series of rock pools offering panoramic views across Kakadu National Park.

A new walkway to the upper pools, opened last year, makes the climb more accessible, with the steep 15 to 20 minute track rewarding visitors with sweeping views across stone country, woodland and riverine landscapes.

A second renowned waterfall, Maguk Falls, is also scheduled to reopen shortly following extensive road upgrades after cyclone damage.

Kakadu Tourism operates guided adventure tours to both Gunlom and Maguk Falls in air-conditioned four-wheel drives throughout the dry season until at least the end of October, with lunch and expert guides included.

A new Toyota LandCruiser has also been added for private tours to major attractions throughout the year.

Visitors to Kakadu can also book weaving and cultural experiences with Traditional Owners at the Warradjan Cultural Centre while Cooinda Lodge has recently completed an upgrade of its 20 Outback Retreat glamping tents, which now all feature ensuite facilities.
