The news marks a significant step in the brand’s expansion into the ANZ market and reflects Riverside’s international growth trajectory, positioning Australasia as a key growth region supported by strong, experienced leadership on the ground.

Williams is one of the most recognised and respected figures in the Australian river cruise sector, bringing more than three decades of industry experience and a deep understanding of the premium travel landscape.

He served as Managing Director of Avalon Waterways Australia under the Globus umbrella, where he was instrumental in introducing and positioning the brand within the Australian market.

Over a 28-year tenure, he successfully built distribution networks, strengthened trade relationships and helped drive the rapid growth of river cruising as a compelling alternative to traditional ocean cruising.

“The Australian and New Zealand market is sophisticated and well-travelled, and it is ready for a river cruise experience at this level,” said Mr Williams.

“Riverside sets a new benchmark in terms of space, service and cultural immersion. When I saw the product, I immediately recognised its potential here.

“This is an opportunity to introduce something genuinely elevated and position it strategically for long-term growth in the region.”

Riverside delivers an all-suite, hotel-style river cruise experience across six of Europe’s most famous rivers.

Operating through 12 countries on the Danube, Rhine, Rhône, Main, Moselle and Saône, the brand combines spacious accommodation, Michelin-level cuisine and immersive cultural access, with itineraries ranging from short three-day sailings to extended 21-day journeys.

Riverside’s modern fleet features generously proportioned suites ranging from 18 square metres to 82 square metres, alongside one of the highest staff-to-guest ratios on Europe’s rivers, with one crew member for every two guests.

Each suite includes dedicated butler service, while immersive shore experiences may include exclusive after-hours access to cultural landmarks such as Belvedere Palace and private viewings of The Kiss.

The fleet includes Riverside Mozart, the largest and most luxurious ship on the Danube, as well as sister ships Riverside Ravel and Riverside Debussy (main image).

“Stewart’s appointment marks a pivotal moment for Riverside in Australia and New Zealand,” said Charlotte Hewitt-Davies, Managing Director of Riverside Luxury Cruises.

“His deep market knowledge and longstanding trade relationships position us perfectly to introduce a new benchmark in ultra-luxury river cruising and to redefine what travellers expect from the category.”
