The journey takes guests from the vibrant capital of Kuala Lumpur to the cultural gems of Ipoh and Penang. Travellers will connect deeply with Malaysia’s living history, rich traditions and diverse communities across three states.
“My guests will experience authentic local flavours and culinary traditions that they likely wouldn’t discover on their own,” Wanitha tells Traveltalk.
“They’ll uncover dishes that reveal history, culture and cooking practices – and immerse themselves in the Malaysian food scene.
“I love showcasing hidden and unique spots, authentic experiences and the local people – my friends, fellow entrepreneurs, environmentalists, artists, movers and shakers – all united by their love for food and Malaysia.”
Wanitha’s (above right) love for cooking was inspired by her father, who was a chef for Malaysian royalty.
“As his youngest child, I had the privilege of being taken not just to the markets from knee-high, but also to his kitchen, where I tasted everything, spent time around chefs and absorbed the energy of that world.”
Asked to describe Malaysia cuisine, Wanitha says that it is deeply rooted in “togetherness – not limited to one culture or community”.
“We Malaysians come from many origins and when it comes to our food, it’s the blending of these influences, along with the stories we bring, that creates connections between people, places and the land itself.
“Our food links us across time and cultures. Every dish tells a story.”
Wanitha spent three years researching and developing her tour, which she plans to run in May and September next year, testament to the popularity of food-based travel.
“This journey is about discovering local flavours and cultivating a deeper appreciation for the culinary arts.
“As part of the tour, I will conduct a hands-on cooking class and live demonstrations. Local chefs and community members will share their personal food stories and traditions. Guests will experience local markets and connect with the heart of the community.
“I’ve curated a journey that tells the story of my country – its people and its food.
“All the hotels we stay in are locally owned, rich in history and filled with incredible stories.
“The food will linger in your memory and the people you meet – from a well-known indigenous artist and his community to my life mentor of over 40 years and from a fifth-generation lumber merchant family turned preservation champion to the oldest inhabitant of Chew Jetty sharing her story – will stay in your heart.”
