Step through the grand revolving doors of Winnipeg’s Fort Garry Hotel and you’ll feel as though you’ve walked onto the set of a period drama.
Elegant, imposing and brimming with old-world charm, this century-old railway hotel is one of Canada’s great historic stays – and yes, it just might be haunted.
A landmark with legacy
Built in 1913 by the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, the Fort Garry stands as a reminder of a time when railway hotels were the last word in luxury.
The beaux-arts façade, chandeliers, sweeping staircases and velvet drapes evoke another era – yet the hotel has moved confidently into the 21st century, with all the amenities modern travellers expect.
Its central location, just a short stroll from The Forks, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights and Union Station, makes it a brilliant base for exploring Winnipeg.
Rooms with character
Rooms at the Fort Garry are warm, comfortable and generously sized, blending heritage touches with contemporary fittings. Think classic armchairs and high ceilings, alongside Nespresso machines and modern bathrooms. Suites – particularly those with corner views – are worth the upgrade.
This isn’t a cookie-cutter stay and that’s part of the charm. Each room feels unique and the hotel exudes atmosphere.
Some guests say a bit too much atmosphere – Room 202, in particular, is said to be haunted by a woman in a white gown. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, it adds an irresistible layer of intrigue to the hotel’s already rich story.
My room was spacious and inviting, with high ceilings and a traditional décor that reflected the hotel’s storied past.
Vintage photos of early Winnipeg hung above the bed, while wooden floors and a patterned rug added warmth and character.
The air conditioning came via an old-style unit beneath the window – functional, though not exactly modern. I opted to switch it off and open the window instead, letting in the fresh spring breeze.
The bathroom was also generously sized, featuring a deep bath and overhead shower – ideal for a relaxing soak after a day exploring the city. I slept soundly and was happy to encounter no ghostly visitors.
Dining, spa and ambience
Downstairs, Oval Room Brasserie serves elegant meals in a historic setting, while the hotel’s Ten Spa is a destination in itself – especially the Turkish hamam, perfect for unwinding after a day exploring Manitoba’s capital. There’s also a small fitness centre and live jazz on certain nights to dial up the mood.
The Fort Garry hosts events and weddings too, so guests might be treated to the soft hum of celebration echoing through its grand halls.
Final verdict
For travellers who appreciate heritage, style and a good story, The Fort Garry Hotel is a gem. It’s not brand new or ultra-sleek, but that’s entirely the point – it’s full of heart, history and, possibly, a ghost or two.

Book early if you’re travelling in summer or during festivals as the Fort Garry is a favourite with locals and visitors alike. And if you’re offered Room 202… well, you’ve been warned.
