Carnival Corporation and three of its cruise lines have donated a combined $US25,000 (approx. $AU36,000) to Direct Relief to support recovery efforts in Hawaii following a series of hurricanes and severe storms this year.
Carnival Cruise Line, Holland America Line and Princess Cruises joined the parent company in contributing to the donation, which will support immediate relief following Hurricane Nolo as well as longer-term recovery after Hurricanes Lala and Lowell.
Direct Relief is working with local healthcare providers, non-profit organisations and health agencies to assess ongoing needs across the islands.
The organisation has pre-positioned three emergency medical stockpiles in Hawaii and supplied field medic packs, water purification equipment and personal care items for displaced residents.
Since the Kona Low storm system affected Hawaii on March 10, followed by Hurricanes Lala and Lowell, Direct Relief has provided more than $US800,000 (approx. $AU1.1m) in medical aid to health centres, clinics and non-profit organisations across the state.
Hawaii is also an important destination for Carnival Corporation’s cruise operations. Its brands collectively make more than 200 calls each year across Nawiliwili, Kahului, Honolulu, Hilo and Kailua Kona, carrying approximately 528,000 guests annually.
The donation will support Direct Relief’s ongoing hurricane response and recovery work across the islands.
