Jetstar is reviewing its cabin baggage policy following ongoing frustration from travellers over its strict carry on weight limit.

According to news.com.au, the airline is reconsidering how its 7 kg carry on rule is enforced, with potential changes that could reduce stress at the boarding gate.

Currently, passengers on Starter fares are limited to a combined total of 7 kg across their main cabin bag and personal item, such as a handbag or laptop case. Travellers can purchase an additional 7 kg allowance when booking, but no individual item can exceed 10 kg. Bags that go over the limit risk being checked into the hold and may attract additional fees.

The weighing process often takes place at the departure gate, creating what many passengers describe as last minute pressure and uncertainty. Jetstar has acknowledged that this process can contribute to what is commonly referred to as ‘gate anxiety’, particularly for travellers unsure whether their bags meet the limit.

As part of the review, the airline is considering whether to adjust the weight allowance, change how additional carry on is priced or potentially move to a size based system instead of a weight based one. Many airlines in the United States focus on bag dimensions rather than weight, meaning passengers only need to ensure their luggage fits within specified measurements.

Under Jetstar’s current policy, carry on bags must measure no more than 56 x 36 x 23 cm, including wheels and handles. Oversized or overweight bags can incur significant fees, especially on international routes.

Compared with other major Australian carriers, Jetstar’s allowance is tighter. Qantas permits up to 14 kg across cabin baggage on domestic flights, while Virgin Australia allows 8 kg plus a personal item in economy.

The review remains in its early stages and no timeline for changes has been confirmed. However, for travellers who have experienced the stress of repacking at the gate, any move to simplify the rules would likely be welcomed.
