Adelaide has welcomed a new era of aviation connectivity with the arrival of the first direct flight from Shanghai.
Operated by China Eastern Airlines, the inaugural flight touched down yesterday, opening a new link between South Australia and one of China’s biggest cities and providing a major boost for tourism, business and trade opportunities.
The flight arrived ahead of schedule and was greeted with a traditional water cannon salute.
The new seasonal service will operate three times a week, using an Airbus A350-900 aircraft with capacity for 286 passengers.
South Australian officials have welcomed the route as an important step in strengthening ties with China, which remains one of the state’s most significant international markets for both exports and visitors.
The direct connection is also expected to make travel easier for Australian tourists heading to China, as well as Chinese visitors looking to explore South Australia’s wine regions, coastal attractions and cultural experiences.
For Adelaide travellers, the new service removes the need for a connecting flight through another Australian or Asian city, reducing travel times and creating a more convenient gateway into China.
The Shanghai connection also provides onward access to a wider range of destinations across the country through China Eastern’s network.
Adelaide Airport managing director Brenton Cox said the long-term success of the route would depend on passenger demand, with hopes the service could become a permanent fixture beyond its initial seasonal schedule.
The arrival comes as Adelaide continues to expand its international aviation network, with direct links seen as a key driver of tourism growth and economic development.
The new Shanghai service is expected to deliver benefits beyond aviation, strengthening links between South Australian businesses, students, families and travellers and providing a valuable new connection between the state and China.
