Authorities in Japan have issued a tsunami warning about waves potentially three metres high following a powerful earthquake off the coast.

The tremor, which registered magnitude 7.8 according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), occurred deep beneath the Pacific Ocean near the northeastern prefecture of Miyagi.

The earthquake’s strength and proximity to the coastline prompted immediate safety measures with tens of thousands of residents ordered to evacuate.

The JMA quickly issued tsunami warnings for multiple prefectures along Japan’s Pacific coast, including Miyagi, Fukushima and Iwate. Coastal residents were urged to evacuate to higher ground without delay.

Local authorities activated emergency protocols and began rapidly dispatching rescue and emergency teams.

In the early aftermath, residents near the coast reported feeling prolonged shaking and many described waking up to loud rumbling and abrupt jolts. There have been no official reports of major damage or any casualties.

As Japan enters what scientists say may be a period of heightened seismic activity, residents along the Pacific coast remain on high alert, prepared for potential aftershocks and future tsunami waves.
