Uber is giving travellers the chance to experience one of Japan’s most iconic underground car cultures firsthand, launching a new limited-edition drifting experience in Tokyo bookable directly through the Uber app.
Dubbed “Uber Drift”, the new tourism product offers visitors the opportunity to ride shotgun with professional Formula Drift drivers during high-speed tandem drifting sessions at the famous Mobara Twin Circuit, located outside Tokyo.
Launching in June, the experience marks the Asia-Pacific debut of Uber’s global “Go Anywhere” travel series, which has previously included unique tourism experiences such as Uber Safari in South Africa and Uber Balloon in Türkiye.
The launch comes as Japan’s popularity with Australian travellers continues to surge, with more than one million Australians visiting the country last year — up 15 per cent year-on-year.
Uber Drift aims to tap into growing demand for immersive and uniquely local experiences by opening up access to Japan’s traditionally hard-to-reach drifting scene.
Originating in Japan during the 1970s, drifting has evolved into a globally recognised motorsport and a major part of Japanese automotive culture, although authentic experiences have often been difficult for tourists to access.
The half-day experience includes premium return transfers from guests’ Tokyo accommodation via Uber Black before arriving at Mobara Twin Circuit for approximately 90 minutes of track action.
Guests will ride alongside licensed Formula Drift drivers in iconic Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) vehicles including the Nissan Silvia S15 and Nissan 180SX during professionally controlled tandem drifting sessions.
The experience can accommodate between one and four guests per booking, with lap allocations able to be shared among the group or used entirely by solo travellers.
Protective helmets will be supplied, while guests are required to wear long sleeves, full-length pants and closed-toe shoes for safety compliance.
Reservations open on 27 May 2026 via the Uber app, with bookable sessions operating between 3 June and 1 July 2026.
Pricing starts from 30,000 Japanese Yen — approximately AU$265 — per group of up to four passengers.
Due to the specialised nature of the experience, availability will be capped at just four groups per day.
Uber said the launch was designed to make niche local experiences more accessible to international visitors through its platform, while giving travellers a rare opportunity to immerse themselves in a foundational part of Japanese car culture.
