Virgin Australia is rolling out a major digital overhaul designed to cut airport check-in times by up to 50 per cent, introducing new app-based features and a streamlined bag drop process across key domestic airports.
The airline announced the upgrades this week, revealing new mobile app functionality alongside an Australian airline-first automated bag drop system powered by camera and barcode recognition technology.
The enhancements come as nearly 80 per cent of Virgin Australia guests now use the airline’s app or website to check in and manage bookings.
Among the new features is the ability for eligible Velocity Frequent Flyer Gold, Platinum and Platinum Plus members to request same-day flight changes directly through the app for the first time.
The airline is also introducing “Fly Earlier”, allowing eligible passengers to move onto earlier flights free of charge during disruptions or busy travel periods if seats are available.
Passengers will also be able to bid for Business Class and Economy X upgrades directly via the app.
At airports, the airline will progressively introduce new bag tag printers and automated one-step bag drop facilities from May 2026 across 10 domestic airports including Sydney Airport, Melbourne Airport, Brisbane Airport and Perth Airport.
Under the new system, travellers who have checked in online or via the app will only need to scan their boarding pass once to print a bag tag before proceeding directly to bag drop without rescanning.
Alex Plummer, General Manager Digital at Virgin Australia, said the investment reflects growing demand for faster, digital-first travel experiences.
“We’re incredibly focused on investing in the customer experience and that starts with digital ease — something our customers expect today,” Plummer said.
“Today’s update is a major step forward in our mission to be Australia’s most-loved airline; allowing customers to check-in, manage their booking and move through the airport in a way that’s never been done before by an Australian airline.”
Virgin Australia said the technology was tested during a live trial at Mackay Airport, where transaction times showed check-in could be completed up to 50 per cent faster.
Dedicated Priority Bag Drop zones for Business Class guests and eligible Velocity members will also be introduced at participating airports as part of the rollout.
The digital upgrades build on a series of customer-focused innovations introduced by Virgin Australia in recent years, including baggage tracking, Pets in Cabin services and new flight search technology combining cash and reward seat options in a single booking view.
