Wales may not be top of mind for most Australian travellers, but what awaits along the historic borderlands with England is some of the most majestic scenery in all of Britain.

On Foot Holidays offers a six-night self-guided walking holiday along Offa’s Dyke, the 132-kilometre ancient earthwork built in the eighth century by King Offa to mark the border between his Anglo-Saxon kingdom and rival kingdoms in what is now Wales.

The Offa’s Dyke and the Marches itinerary covers 92 kilometres through the beautiful Welsh Marches, passing enchanting medieval towns, castles, sweeping hills and lofty ridges while criss-crossing the England-Wales border numerous times.

The route begins in the historic town of Bishop’s Castle and winds south through Clun, Knighton and Kington before finishing in Hay-on-Wye, the pretty Welsh town famous for its second-hand bookshops.

Graded medium-hard with three to six hours of walking each day, the package includes six nights accommodation in country pubs and B&Bs, all breakfasts, local transfers, maps and daily luggage transfers. Travellers carry only a day pack.

The holiday costs from £910 per person twin share (approx. $1,718). Walkers who book two On Foot Holidays itineraries for one European trip save 10 per cent on the cheaper of the two.
