Travellers love discovering a quirky new hotel that they can boast to their friends and family about, but some tourists are taking it to extremes.
People are paying thousands of dollars to stay in shark-infested waters on a former Coast Guard station in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
According to a report in the New York Post , the Frying Pan Tower sits 24 metres above the water. Built in 1964, it is located more than 50km offshore in a stretch of coastline historically known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic.

A TikTok video posted by charter boat captain Austin Aycock (above) has since been watched by more than two million people as he ferries guests to the tower off the North Carolina coast.
The NYP report says the hotel costs $290 per person per night with a three-night minimum, putting the total bill at around $870 per guest for a short stay.
Guests are hoisted up to the main platform via a high-speed lift. Up to 12 guests can stay across eight bedrooms, with amenities including a fully equipped stainless steel kitchen, washer and dryer, hot showers and high-speed internet powered by solar energy.
Activities range from fishing and snorkelling to skeet shooting with biodegradable clay targets and teeing off biodegradable golf balls made from fish food.
