Councils and tourism leaders have come together to collaborate, share insights and unlock new opportunities for the visitor economy.

The gathering took place during the 2026 LGNSW Destination and Visitor Economy Conference in Maitland.

Mayor Darcy Byrne, President of LGNSW, said the conference was a resounding success, showcasing the critical role councils play in growing the visitor economy.

“Tourism helps build stronger, more resilient communities. This conference has shown the value of local leadership in turning ambition into action and creating lasting opportunities for communities across the state,” Mayor Byrne said.

Council representatives from across NSW gathered to explore the critical role of tourism in driving economic growth, supporting local jobs and strengthening community resilience.

Delegates engaged in a dynamic mix of panel discussions, workshops and site visits, exploring everything from emerging trends and practical tools in the visitor economy to global marketing strategies and key policy issues shaping the sector.

The program also delved into how council-owned assets can be activated to enhance visitor experiences, alongside the opportunities presented by new and upgraded airport infrastructure to drive future tourism growth.

Planning is already under way for the 2027 LGNSW Destination and Visitor Economy Conference, to be hosted by the City of Coffs Harbour on the Coffs Coast.
