With Club Med Borneo preparing to welcome its first guests on 16 November 2026, Traveltalk takes a closer look at what the new all-inclusive resort will offer Australian travellers.

Located across 17 hectares at Kuala Penyu in Sabah, Club Med Borneo will be the company’s second Malaysian property after Club Med Cherating. It is also being designed to become Asia Pacific’s first large-scale, BREEAM-certified beach resort.

The 400-room property is around two hours by road from Kota Kinabalu International Airport. Australian flight packages are available with Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines and Royal Brunei, with Club Med currently advertising seven-night flight and accommodation packages from $3,585 per person, twin share, including airport transfers. Prices are subject to availability and change.

Guests will have access to 33 included activities, ranging from sailing, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding to padel, pickleball, tennis, archery, yoga and Club Med’s flying trapeze and circus school.

The resort will also include a main swimming pool, family Splash Park and a spa comprising individual treatment chalets set within the forest.

Accommodation will range from 35-square-metre Superior Rooms and 45-square-metre Deluxe Rooms to suites within Mutiara, Club Med Borneo’s private Exclusive Collection space.

The resort-within-a-resort will comprise 39 suites, including 59-square-metre suites for couples and 88-square-metre Family Suites accommodating up to four guests. Mutiara guests will have access to a private lagoon pool, the exclusive Bayu lounge bar, concierge services, breakfast room service and priority reservations at the spa and speciality restaurant.

Dining will centre around The Alam, the resort’s main restaurant, where four dining areas will draw inspiration from Borneo’s forests, rice fields, rivers and beaches. The Laut will offer an à la carte menu featuring dishes such as Malaysian-style grilled ikan bakar and curry prawns, while The Pasir will serve as the resort’s principal bar.

Families will be catered for with age-specific programs spanning from Baby Club Med for children aged four months to two years through to Club Med Chill Pass for teenagers aged 14 to 17. Childcare for children under four will be available at an additional cost.

While the resort itself will offer a substantial activity program, its location will also give guests access to some of Sabah’s wildlife, cultural and coastal experiences. Available excursions are expected to include Klias River cruises in search of proboscis monkeys and fireflies, snorkelling and volcanic mud experiences on Pulau Tiga and tours exploring local traditions.

“We envisioned Club Med Borneo as a sanctuary where our unique hospitality meets the wild, untouched beauty of Sabah,” said Rachael Harding, CEO – East, South Asia and Pacific at Club Med.

“Whether guests are seeking the tranquillity of our Exclusive Collection Space or the high-energy excitement of our signature sports and shows, every detail celebrates the vibrancy of local culture and the natural habitat.”

The resort’s central timber pavilion takes its design cues from traditional Rumah Rungus longhouses, while rooms incorporate timber, woven materials and handmade details influenced by Sabah’s landscape and cultural heritage.

Sustainability initiatives include an on-site water-bottling plant, the removal of most single-use plastics and energy and water-saving systems.
