New insights from Cruise Guru, one of Australia’s top cruise specialists, reveal a major shift in how Aussies are booking their cruise holidays for 2026 — bigger cabins, earlier planning, and a strong focus on value.

Recent booking data shows nearly half (48%) of travellers are opting for balcony cabins, with suites also gaining popularity, while traditional inside cabins are losing ground. Cruise Guru’s Chief Commercial Officer, Michael Betteridge, says this reflects a clear “quality over quantity” mindset.

“Aussies want the fun of cruising but also crave their own private space and comfort,” Betteridge explains. “They’re willing to invest for the best experience — and our experts are on hand to guide them to the perfect choice.”

Value-packed fares are also on the rise, with about 45% of bookings including extras like drinks, Wi-Fi, and specialty dining. “Customers are focusing on total trip value, not just the headline price,” Betteridge adds.

Planning ahead is now the norm, with an average booking lead time of nine months — travellers are keen to lock in their preferred ship, itinerary, and cabin early to avoid missing out.

International cruising is also gaining momentum, particularly to Asia, which saw a 45% increase in searches in late 2025. While local cruising remains popular for its convenience, more Aussies are dreaming bigger, adventurous trips abroad.
