🌍 What was it that inspired you to join the travel industry in the first place?
A: Travel has been in my blood from a very young age – growing up with my Mum getting her pilots licence throughout my teen years while having amazing family holidays and cruises gave me a deep appreciation for the way travel connects people, cultures and experiences.
That early exposure sparked a passion to turn something I love into a career.
✨ What is it about the travel industry that you enjoy the most?
A: The people I’ve worked with have had the biggest impact on how good I feel about my job. Whether that’s work colleagues, agents or suppliers.
I’ve had the pleasure of meeting some incredibly inspiring people in my career, many of whom have seen more potential in me than I even saw in myself and have been so encouraging and supportive.
🔄 If you hadn’t gone into travel, what other career path might you have taken?
A: My career aspirations have never strayed far from the travel, tourism and hospitality industry.
From the early days of wanting to be an Air Force pilot or flight attendant then moving my sights to hotel General Manager or Cruise Director before joining Qantas Holidays in my early 20’s and forging a career into sales and partnerships.
I’m really proud that my passion for this industry has contributed to what I feel to be an extremely successful career.
💡 What advice would you give someone wanting to start a career in travel now?
A: Be curious, be adaptable and be authentic. The travel industry is evolving quickly, so embrace learning and focus on building genuine connections.
I’ve always said to people new to our industry “If you don’t like change, don’t get into travel” But if you’re flexible and relish the challenge of an industry where there’s constant movement, you’re in the right place.
With lots of passion, hard work, good mentors and never being afraid of taking a step sideways or out of your comfort zone, you’ll go far in any direction you choose.
🏁 What’s the first thing you do when you start a new position?
A: Ask questions, listen and learn!
Question – it’s the best time to ask whatever you like – as silly as the questions may be because the excuse of being “new” doesn’t last long!
Listen – to colleagues, agents and clients, take in everything they have to tell you as it will help you get a better feel for the company culture and to understand where you can add value.
Learn – about the business, do my research, establish what key selling points I’ll naturally lean towards when promoting the company to industry partners.
📈 How do you think the travel industry is looking at this moment in time?
A: Unfortunately, it’s back in an uncertain phase. After the strong recovery from Covid, other global challenges are now having a major effect.
However, after working through 9/11, Ansett collapse, Bali bombings, SARS, volcanoes, GFC, riots and Covid, I know (and it’s been proven) that our industry will thrive again after the Middle East situation calms down.
Quality travel agents will be in even more demand than before, as will a strong appetite for premium, experience-rich travel and family-oriented journeys.
Small group touring, in particular, will see renewed interest again as travellers seek comfort and adventure but with a high focus on safety.
✈️ Who would you most like to sit next to on a plane, living or dead?
A: Other than my husband and two teenage daughters who are the centre of my world…. after watching her Netflix doco, I would love the chance to chat to Kylie Minogue as a fellow breast cancer survivor.
🗺️ What are some of your favourite spots around the world?
- Japan – from my first visit on an exchange trip in year 7 for its mix of amazing people, culture, food and nature.
- Europe – Italy/France – blends history, food and family memories from our European holidays.
- Australia – our backyard but a place of diverse landscapes and experiences.
The Kimberley and Uluru especially resonate with spiritual and historical relevance. - Rottnest Island – so close off the coast of Perth but with so much sentimental value. Still one of my family’s most favourite places in the world.
🤝 What are you most looking forward to about working with Intrepid?
A: Being the first Perth-based Key Partnership Manager for Intrepid since before 2019, I’m most looking forward to helping the fabulous WA & NT travel industry discover (and rediscover) our business and all we have to offer.
Working for Intrepid means aligning with a company that values authentic experiences, sustainability and connection.
I’m excited to contribute to a purpose driven business and grow our footprint in WA & NT while learning from a superstar team that shares my passion.
