Fiji Airways is strengthening its commercial muscle with a series of senior leadership appointments across Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific – a decisive move designed to accelerate sustainable growth across its core markets.
Paul Scurrah, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, said the appointments reflect a clear focus on investing in leadership capability where it matters most.
“Building on our current strength, we are reinforcing leadership across our key markets and commercial functions,” Mr Scurrah added.
“These appointments position us to deepen trade partnerships, optimise our network and deliver sustained growth.”
Gai Tyrrell to lead Australia and New Zealand
Seasoned aviation executive Gai Tyrrell steps into the role of Regional Director – Australia and New Zealand, taking charge of the airline’s largest and most strategically significant markets.
Tyrrell brings heavyweight industry credentials, having previously served as Managing Director Asia Pacific for the Globus family of brands, Regional Director Australia and New Zealand for Hawaiian Airlines and Vice President & CEO Australia and New Zealand for Sabre Pacific.
With Australia and New Zealand central to Fiji Airways’ commercial strategy, her appointment is expected to sharpen trade partnerships and unlock further growth opportunities across the region.
John Nickel to head Pacific Islands Portfolio
John Nickel will transition into the role of Regional General Manager – Pacific Islands from April 1, overseeing a portfolio critical to tourism, trade and regional connectivity.
His stakeholder engagement expertise and market knowledge will support continued expansion across the Pacific network.
Russell Shaw appointed Chief – Network, Revenue and Alliances
Rounding out the leadership refresh, Russell Shaw joins as Chief – Network, Revenue and Alliances.
With more than two decades of commercial and financial experience — including senior roles at Virgin Australia, Civica and Equatorial Launch Australia — Shaw will lead network optimisation, revenue performance and alliance strategy as the airline advances its next phase of growth.
Kamal Haer, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer, said the combined expertise of Tyrrell and Nickel will play a key role in strengthening market performance.
“Gai and John both bring strong market knowledge and leadership experience,” Ms Haer added. “Together, they will drive our sales and marketing strategy, strengthen trade partnerships and accelerate growth across Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific.”
