In the province of Manitoba a two night train journey connects the gateway city of Winnipeg with the sub arctic town of Churchill.

During the winter Aurora season travellers on this iconic route have the chance to watch the night sky come alive with colour from the comfort of a glass dome carriage.

As the train heads north it cuts through vast prairies, thick boreal forests and seemingly endless stretches of pristine tundra. The voyage provides a spectacular transition through diverse landscapes and offers a rare glimpse into the untouched corners of the far north.

Many travellers experience the journey as part of an Aurora viewing package offered by Frontiers North Adventures. The experience typically includes a one way flight from Winnipeg to Churchill followed by the return journey by rail, creating a memorable way to explore northern Manitoba.

Compliments of VIA Rail Canada

As the train travels south from Churchill to Winnipeg, passengers pass through sweeping tundra, boreal forest and vast wilderness. The route offers a rare sense of scale and solitude, with landscapes that feel untouched and expansive.

In Churchill, guests travelling with Frontiers North enjoy a range of guided experiences designed to maximise the chances of seeing the Aurora Borealis. Situated directly beneath the Aurora Oval, Churchill is one of the best places in the world to view the Aurora Borealis and experiences aurora activity over 300 nights per year.

Excursions take visitors out onto the tundra for dedicated Aurora viewing, accompanied by cultural interpretation and insights from experienced local guides. Comfortable northern accommodation and the company’s decades of expertise in polar tourism add depth and reassurance to the experience.

The rail journey itself is a highlight. Travellers can relax while taking in panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, enjoying comfortable onboard facilities and the slower pace that train travel allows.

The prime Aurora season is February – March and August – November.

During Aurora season, the remote route’s minimal light pollution provides ideal conditions for northern lights viewing, turning the overnight journey into a memorable part of the adventure.
