This will increase international layover capacity and support the airport’s long-term growth strategy.

The project delivers four new layover bays to accommodate aircraft like A380s and upgrades to two existing bays to fit large aircraft including the Boeing 777, Airbus A340, or Airbus A350, with a flexible configuration to accommodate up to six Code E and four Code F aircraft.

It includes three new taxiways and taxilanes to improve aircraft flow and reduce congestion, along with in-ground infrastructure, such as ground power, pre-conditioned air and a future-ready hydrant refuelling system, enhancing safety, efficiency and sustainability.

“This project is a key part of our long-term strategy to grow and future-proof Sydney Airport,” said Paul Willis, Sydney Airport Group Executive Planning and Delivery

“By expanding our international layover capacity, we’re unlocking greater efficiency across the airfield, freeing up gates during peak periods and improving aircraft flow and turnaround times.

“That means smoother operations for our airline partners and a better experience for passengers.”

The South-East Sector Apron expansion project forms part of Sydney Airport’s broader infrastructure plan to cater for forecast international growth – investing in line with demand.

“While COVID temporarily paused construction, completing this project reinforces our commitment to delivering the major infrastructure needed to support Sydney Airport’s role as Australia’s international gateway for decades to come,” added Mr Willis.
