At least four tourists are among 25 people killed in an horrific nightclub fire in Goa in India.

According to officials, the blaze began around 11:45pm local time at Birch by Romeo Lane at Baga in India’s North Goa region.

Reports claim around 100 people were reportedly on the dance floor when either fireworks or a gas-cylinder blast ignited the fire.

As panic spread, many patrons rushed downstairs toward the kitchen and basement – a dead end with no proper ventilation or alternate exit route – where staff and some guests became trapped and succumbed to suffocation and smoke inhalation.

Of the 25 confirmed dead, four were tourists and the rest were staff members working at the club. Six people injured in the blaze are in hospital, receiving treatment.

The state government has ordered a magisterial inquiry to determine exactly how the fire started and if all safety standards were met.
