Drivers heading to Melbourne Airport will face major changes from October 6, when new public Pick up and Drop off zones open for Terminals 1, 2 and 3.
The changes represent the biggest alteration to the airport’s road network since it opened in 1970.
From October 6, drivers collecting or dropping off passengers for any airline will need to leave the Tullamarine Freeway earlier at Exit 19, Naarm Way, before using the elevated roadway to access the terminals.
A new free Drop off zone will open on Level 3 of the T123 Transport Hub, providing more space than the current departures ramp, which will close on the same day.
The closure will allow work to begin on projects supporting a $4.5 billion expansion of the international terminal.
A new free, undercover Pick up zone will also open on Level 2 of the transport hub, offering more than 100 car spaces and providing passengers with access to toilets and shelter while they wait.
Access to airport parking will remain unchanged. Drivers arriving early for pick up can continue using the 60 minute Free Wait Zone off Mercer Drive before travelling to the new collection area via Airport Drive and Naarm Way.
Lorie Argus, Melbourne Airport CEO, said the changes were designed to accommodate increasing traffic and passenger volumes, with more than 100,000 people currently using the airport each day.
“The new Pick up and Drop off zones will separate private and commercial vehicles, provide drivers with more space and give our passengers comfortable places to wait away from Melbourne’s unpredictable weather,” Ms Argus said.
Melbourne Airport Assist, operated in partnership with Travellers Aid, will also be extended to the new zones to support passengers requiring assistance moving through the precinct.
An online journey planner has been launched to help drivers familiarise themselves with the new access arrangements before October 6.
