Air New Zealand has taken delivery of its first new Boeing 787 Dreamliner in seven years, with the aircraft set to enter service ahead of the busy summer travel period.

The new 787-9, ZK-NZT, is the world’s first certified Dreamliner with increased maximum take-off weight capability, providing additional flexibility for passengers, baggage and cargo on long-haul routes including Auckland to New York.

A second new aircraft, ZK-NZS, is expected to follow within days.

The aircraft features Air New Zealand’s latest interiors, including eight business premier luxe seats, 34 business premier seats, 52 premium economy seats and 125 economy seats, including Skycouch and economy stretch options.

Jeremy O’Brien, Air New Zealand Chief Customer and Digital Officer, said the aircraft’s arrival would increase access to the airline’s latest cabins during one of its busiest periods.

Thirteen of Air New Zealand’s existing 14 Dreamliners have also been refitted with the new interiors, with the final aircraft due to be completed by the end of the year.

The airline’s Boeing 777 fleet is scheduled to receive updated business premier and economy cabins in 2027.

Air New Zealand has also confirmed its economy Skynest product will be installed after the summer peak.

The lie-flat economy concept had been scheduled to launch in December but has been delayed while final regulatory certification is completed.
