Singapore Airlines has signed an agreement to purchase up to 4,800 tonnes of next-generation sustainable aviation fuel from Aether Fuels over three years, with deliveries due to begin in 2028.

The airline will become the first customer to purchase SAF from Aether’s Project Beacon facility, which is being developed at Aster’s refining complex on Pulau Bukom in Singapore.

The fuel will be produced from waste carbon feedstocks including biomethane and industrial waste gases using Aether’s Aurora technology, offering an alternative to more established SAF pathways that rely on lipid-based feedstocks.

Lee Wen Fen, Singapore Airlines Chief Sustainability Officer, said securing future SAF supply was an important part of the airline’s goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

“As the first airline to purchase SAF from Project Beacon, SIA is demonstrating demand for new lower-carbon fuel production pathways in Singapore,” Ms Lee said.

Aether plans to develop a larger commercial plant by 2031 with production capacity at least 10 times greater than Project Beacon, as it works to scale its next-generation fuel technology.
