Peru is taking centre stage on Australian screens, with a new eight-part travel and food series Sergio Perera’s Destination Peru now streaming on SBS On Demand.

Led by Spanish-born chef Perera alongside MasterChef Australia alumni Minoli De Silva and Conor Curran, the series explores the country’s diverse landscapes, rich culinary heritage, local communities and cultural traditions.

Travelling from the coastal capital of Lima to the peaks of the Andes, the trio explore some of Peru’s famous attractions alongside lesser-known destinations and experiences, offering plenty of inspiration for Australians considering their next trip.

Some of the destinations and experiences featured throughout the series include:

  • Lima: Exploring the UNESCO-listed Historic Centre and legendary Bar Cordano, while discovering the food culture that has helped establish Lima as one of the world’s leading culinary destinations.
  • Arequipa & the Colca Valley: Discovering Arequipa’s historic Santa Catalina Monastery and traditional regional cuisine, before heading into the Colca Valley to explore ancient pre-Inca agricultural terraces.
  • Puno & Lake Titicaca: Meeting the Uros community on Lake Titicaca, learning about traditional ingredients such as quinoa and venturing into the dramatic landscapes of Tinajani Canyon.
  • Cusco, the Sacred Valley & Machu Picchu: Experiencing a traditional Pachamama ceremony, preparing a pachamanca using ancient Andean cooking techniques, visiting Machu Picchu and exploring Cusco’s vibrant San Pedro Market.

Throughout the journey, the series highlights the connection between Peru’s food, people and culture, with Sergio, Minoli and Conor bringing their own Spanish, Sri Lankan and Greek culinary backgrounds to the experience.

From world-famous archaeological sites to regional cuisines, living traditions and lesser-known landscapes, Sergio Perera’s Destination Peru showcases the diversity of experiences awaiting Australian travellers beyond the country’s most recognisable attractions.
