South Lake Tahoe has been named Expedia’s top trending destination for 2027, with search interest up 195%, adding fresh attention to the California mountain destination among international travellers.
Located on the California-Nevada border in the Sierra Nevada, South Lake Tahoe offers year-round activities ranging from hiking, cycling and lakeside experiences in the warmer months to skiing and snowboarding during winter.
The destination could also become more accessible to Australian travellers following the launch of Qantas’ seasonal non-stop Sydney to Las Vegas service from December 29.
Las Vegas is a 70-minute flight from Reno-Tahoe International Airport, followed by approximately 1.5 to two hours by road to South Lake Tahoe, creating the potential to combine the destination with a broader American West itinerary.
For travel advisors, the new air connection and Expedia’s ranking could provide an opportunity to position South Lake Tahoe as an alternative addition to traditional California itineraries, particularly for clients looking to combine city stays with outdoor experiences.
The destination offers a contrasting extension to Las Vegas, with mountain scenery, Lake Tahoe and a mix of seasonal activities providing options across different travel styles and times of year.
